This is a 45-hour class in which you must pass a written test to become certified to carry a gun. The class combines classroom time, physical instruction on handcuffing, holds and restraints, and weapon retention. The students will spend half of one day at the shooting range and pass a shooting test to qualify to carry a gun.
You must qualify with the style of weapon you plan on carrying. So if you shoot a semiautomatic pistol and pass the shooting test then you can carry that type in any caliber you choose but not less than a 9 mm. If you choose to carry a shotgun then you must pass the shooting test with a shotgun as well.
Once you complete this course and pass’s both the firing range and written exam with passing scores you will receive a certificate of completion.
At that time you can take the certificate to any security company you want to work for and apply for a job. However, they cannot carry the gun until the security company sends in the certificate with the application for the armed security pocket card. Once that card comes in then you can carry the gun.
The license is good for 2 years from the date it is issued from the state.
The officer must re-qualify every 2 years with an 8-hour course to be able to stay armed and have the active commission card.
* This class now includes baton training.
